How can I help you?
I’ve written my book/website content/marketing material, and just want someone to look it over.
Great! Well done. Let’s talk about what you’re looking for in terms of editing—does the overall organization and flow of the content need help? Do you want to focus only on grammar, punctuation, word usage, etc.? Sometimes the piece needs a combination of the two, or something in between. I’ll need to see a sample, and then we can discuss your expectations and concerns. I’m also happy to do a short sample edit for free, so you can get a feel for my approach.
I haven’t started writing yet—I know what I want to say, but I’m not sure whether it should be a blog post, an e-book, a newsletter…
I understand—the number of options for publishing content these days can be overwhelming. Let’s discuss your goals first. What do you want to accomplish? Your target audience will be a key factor, too—who do you want to reach? We’ll also go over the material you want to cover. Then we can create a plan that will include how much content you need to write, what media/channels/platforms are best suited to your purpose, how frequently to publish, and how to tie it all together. The process applies whether you’re thinking about a single blog post, a book or an entire online presence.
I’m an expert in my field and I have a lot of exciting information I want to share, but I’m not a writer.
Then this might be a perfect match. I love helping people get their message across clearly. So let’s talk about what you want to say and who your audience is. I’ll ask you a bunch of questions to understand your goals and the way you’re thinking about your subject matter, and once we’re both comfortable, you can get back to your work and I’ll start writing. We’ll agree beforehand on review and revision cycles, etc.
We have a website, a blog, a Facebook page, a Twitter feed, and all kinds of print collateral, and we’re changing our business focus/strategy/voice & tone—so it all needs to be updated ASAP!
No worries. If you already have an inventory of all your content, this will be easy. If not, we’ll figure out the best way to create one, and then get to work on the revisions.
What else do you do?
I can help with just about any content-related issues, including:
- structural/developmental editing, line editing and/or copy editing of books/e-books, websites, blog posts, emails, newsletters, scripts and other materials
- editing the work of ESL authors
- post-translation editing
- copywriting and business writing
- editorial vision and content strategy (what to publish, when, where and how)
- repurposing existing content
My favorite subjects/genres/areas of expertise include arts and culture, travel and hospitality, languages, body/mind/spirit, self-help, how-to and memoir. My background is in nonfiction, but I’ve edited some short stories and children’s fiction. All that said, I’ve worked in a lot of other areas too, and most of what I do is broadly applicable. If your project is completely different from anything I’ve mentioned here, let’s talk.
How much will it cost?
Every project is different, so I’ll need to ask you some questions before I can give you an estimate (and for editing projects, I’ll need a sample of the content). In many cases, I prefer to offer a project quote, but sometimes an hourly rate will make more sense. Either way, my goal is to ensure that you’re so happy with the process, the finished product and the value that I’m the first person you call to help with your next project.
How do we get started?
I’m glad you asked! Just go to my Contact page, tell me as much as you can about your project and what you’re looking for, and let me know how and when best to reach you. I’ll get back to you within one business day, and we’ll go from there. I look forward to talking with you.
It was such a pleasure working with Rachel. Not only did her edits and suggestions significantly improve my workbook, she patiently answered all of my questions and made the entire process a breeze. I’m already looking forward to working with Rachel on my next project!Cate Brubaker, PhD
I was repeatedly amazed at how you translated me! Your suggestions and corrections made the book more readable, more true to what I was often struggling to communicate… It’s a good story now, thanks to you. … I think we made a wonderful team. I had stories to tell, and you helped me tell them. Thank you for keeping my voice.Jenice McAlevy
Rachel is a fantastic colleague and a great person to work with. She brings ideas to the table on messaging and brand issues. She understands the mechanics of communications and she effectively executes against a plan.
She also produces high-quality written work product on a timely basis. Her ear for writing tone and sensitivity to her audience are near perfect, and she tenaciously fights to assure that work product is of the highest quality.Benjamin Geyerhahn
